SERMON TEXT | Song of songs 7:11-8:4

The Bride Gives Her Love

11 Come, my beloved,
let us go out into the fields
    and lodge in the villages;
12 let us go out early to the vineyards
and see whether the vines have budded,
whether the grape blossoms have opened
and the pomegranates are in bloom.
There I will give you my love.
13 The mandrakes give forth fragrance,
and beside our doors are all choice fruits,
new as well as old,
which I have laid up for you, O my beloved.

Longing for Her Beloved

Oh that you were like a brother to me
who nursed at my mother's breasts!
If I found you outside, I would kiss you,
    and none would despise me.
I would lead you and bring you
into the house of my mother—
she who used to teach me.
I would give you spiced wine to drink,
    the juice of my pomegranate.
His left hand is under my head,
and his right hand embraces me!
I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem,
that you not stir up or awaken love
    until it pleases.

Title: “Sustaining Desire”

Speaker: Rev. Tolivar Wills

CONFESSION OF SIN

Confession:

Forgive us, O Lord, that we are too often fearful and doubting,

Lord Jesus, have mercy.

Forgive us when we put our own comfort and safety before that of others,

Lord Jesus, have mercy.

Forgive us that we take people’s generosity and kindness to us for granted,

Lord Jesus, have mercy.

Forgive us that we are so often superior and condescending in our attitude,

Lord Jesus, have mercy.

Forgive us our lack of love,

Lord Jesus, have mercy.

O Lord God, may we show forth your praise not only with our lips, but in our lives. This we ask for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Assurance:

Jesus was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification. Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
